If you need to build a chicken house and want to save some money, you are in luck. It is fairly easy to find inexpensive chicken house plans online. You can even make the process more fun by adding your own creative touch to the house. Many people spend over $300.00 building a chicken house. If you do that, you are not using your ingenuity.
The size of your coop will obviously depend on the number of chickens you have or plan to have. Each chicken will need about 3 to 4 square feet of space. This will help you decide the dimensions you will need.

A chicken coop can be made from almost any type of material. You can use scrap lumber, large barrels, pipes an old shed or anything else that you can find. You need to just make it the right size. You need to make sure that there are windows included in your chicken house plans. In the winter, the sun coming in can help keep the chickens warm. You also need to provide a means of good ventilation for the chickens.
Build your chicken nest boxes along one wall of the chicken coop. Chicken nest boxes should be about 15 x 15 x 11 inches in size. Fill the boxes with padding on the bottom and some straw. This will help make sure that the eggs don’t get cracked. Your chicken house plans will need to also include roosts for your chickens. You can use 2 x 4’s positioned about 4 feet off the ground. Use a wider piece of board as a angled up as a ladder for them to walk up to the roost.

You can build the floor with wire and that way you can catch the droppings in a container under the house. Just put enough straw and pellets on the floor so the chickens can walk around. Every few days you will need to rake the straw and pellets so the droppings fall through. You can just remove the container when needed and empty the droppings.
